In ODIs, India has surpassed Pakistan to become the top-ranked side ahead of the World Cup in their own country. As a consequence, they now hold the top rank across all formats, having previously held the top spot in Tests and T20Is. India became only the second team in men's cricket history to accomplish this feat, following South Africa in August 2012.

Following their victory against Australia on Friday, India now has 116 rating points, one more than Pakistan. They might yet fall down the ladder if Australia wins the next two games of the series.

Throughout the month, India, Pakistan, and Australia was all vying for the top slot. Pakistan won it at the end of the Asia Cup despite having a dismal competition. Australia's challenge faded after losing three consecutive ODIs to South Africa. India went on to win their seventh Asia Cup championship after crushing Sri Lanka in the final, and they followed it up by easily defeating Pat Cummins' squad. Mohammed Shami took a career-high five wickets, while four of their top six batsmen hit half-centuries.

India also has four No. 1 players across formats: Suryakumar Yadav is the No. 1 batter in T20Is, Mohammed Siraj is the No. 1 bowler in ODIs, while R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are the No. 1 bowling and allrounder in Tests.

India will play two more One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against Australia, at Indore and Rajkot, respectively. They will also play two World Cup warm-up matches before facing Australia in the tournament opener on October 8 in Chennai.
